Home insurance protects your building and contents against risks such as fire, lightning, explosion, escape of water, storm, flood, theft and glass breakage. As a homeowner you can insure the building and contents together, and as a tenant you can insure your contents and your tenant’s liability. The policy can be extended with various additional covers to suit your home and your needs.
Compulsory earthquake insurance (TCIP, known locally as DASK) covers earthquake damage to the building only, up to a set limit. An earthquake extension added to your home policy can also protect building damage above the TCIP limit, as well as earthquake damage to your contents. Setting sums insured on the basis of rebuilding cost and the actual value of contents reduces the risk of underinsurance in a claim.
