CMR Liability

Protects your carrier’s liability under the CMR Convention against claims for loss of, damage to or delay in delivery of goods carried internationally by road.

Contracts for the international carriage of goods by road are governed by the CMR Convention, under which the carrier is liable for loss of, damage to and delay in delivery of the goods from the moment it takes them over until delivery. Claims brought by the sender or consignee on this basis can become a significant financial burden for your business, even from a single journey. The higher the value of the goods you carry, the greater the potential impact.

CMR Liability Insurance covers the legal liability you incur as a carrier under the Convention and the consignment note. It responds to valid claims and also meets the defence costs of resisting unjustified ones. This gives assurance to your customers and partners and helps you satisfy the insurance requirements of shippers and tendering authorities, making contracting smoother. The policy can be arranged per journey or annually to cover all of your journeys.

Who is it for?

  • Road haulage companies operating international transport
  • Companies carrying their own exports and imports with their own fleet
  • Carriers acting as subcontractors on international journeys
  • Businesses required by shippers or partners to hold a CMR policy

Scope of cover

  • Loss of and damage to goods: carrier’s liability for loss or damage occurring during carriage
  • Delay in delivery: compensation claims arising from delay under the CMR Convention
  • Defence costs: legal defence and survey expenses in resisting unjustified claims
  • Theft: theft of goods with or from the vehicle, subject to policy conditions
  • Carriage charges and expenses: freight and customs charges refundable under the Convention
  • Territorial scope: cover area defined according to the countries in which you operate
  • Temperature-controlled and special cargo: optional extensions for refrigeration breakdown and specific commodities

Scope of cover, limits and deductibles are determined by the insurer’s general and special conditions; the final scope is set out in the policy.

The Proxima Brokers approach

We assess your routes, the commodities you carry, your vehicles and security measures to build a clear picture of your liability profile. We review policy conditions and exclusions line by line and place cover that fits your needs. As the final scope depends on the policy wording, we revisit it at each renewal in line with your current operations and organise the claims process promptly when a loss is notified.
